Humidity, ventilation, waterproofing and layout mistakes that cause mold, leaks and regret in Houston bathrooms — and how to avoid them.
The most costly bathroom remodel mistakes in Houston are skipping a proper waterproofing membrane behind tile, undersizing or not venting the exhaust fan outside, ignoring slope to the drain, choosing finishes that don't handle humidity, and moving plumbing without checking the slab. Each one is cheap to get right during construction and expensive to fix later.
1. Treating cement board as waterproofing
Cement board and grout are not waterproof. Showers need a continuous membrane (sheet or liquid-applied) on walls, bench and pan, flood-tested before tile goes on. In Houston's humid climate, moisture that gets behind tile has little chance to dry.
2. A fan that doesn't actually remove moisture
The exhaust fan should be sized for the room and ducted outdoors — not into the attic. A humidity-sensing switch or timer helps it run long enough after showers to prevent mildew on ceilings and grout.
3. Wrong slope and drain placement
Curbless and walk-in showers need consistent slope toward the drain. Linear drains make large-format tile easier but must be planned with the floor build-up. Poor slope leaves standing water and stains.
4. Moving plumbing without checking the slab
Most Houston homes sit on concrete slabs. Moving a toilet or drain means cutting the slab, rerouting lines and patching. It's often worth it, but it should be priced and scoped up front — not discovered mid-demo.
5–8. Finishes, storage, lighting and schedule
Choose porcelain tile, sealed grout and moisture-rated vanities. Plan storage before tile layout. Layer lighting at the mirror, not just overhead. And order long-lead items (glass, vanities, fixtures) before demolition so the bathroom isn't out of service longer than needed.

Mistake vs. what to ask for instead
| Common mistake | Ask for instead |
|---|---|
| Tile over cement board only | Continuous waterproofing membrane + flood test |
| Fan vented into attic | Properly sized fan ducted outdoors |
| Flat shower floor | Measured slope to drain; linear drain if needed |
| Plumbing moves found mid-job | Slab and drain plan in the written scope |
| Fixtures ordered after demo | Selections and orders before demolition |
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know my shower was waterproofed correctly?
- Ask which membrane system is used, request photos before tile goes on, and ask whether the pan is flood-tested.
- Is a curbless shower a good idea in Houston?
- Yes, when the floor is recessed or built up correctly and slope and drainage are planned from the start.
- Should I get a permit for a bathroom remodel?
- Plumbing and electrical changes usually require permits in Houston-area cities. We confirm requirements for your address.
