Cabinet refacing vs replacing: what makes sense for your Houston kitchen

October 2, 2026 7 min readUpdated October 2, 2026By Novara Construction

Refacing, refinishing or new cabinets — what each includes, when each is worth it, and the questions that decide the answer.

Quick answer

Reface your cabinets when the boxes are solid, the layout works and you only want a new look: new doors, drawer fronts and veneer cost less than new cabinets and take less time. Replace them when boxes are water-damaged or sagging, you want a different layout or more storage, or you're doing a full kitchen remodel with new counters anyway. Refinishing (painting the existing doors) is the least expensive option but only changes color.

Three options defined

Refinishing: cleaning, sanding, priming and painting existing doors and boxes. Changes color only.

Refacing: new doors and drawer fronts, new veneer on the box faces, new hinges and hardware. The boxes, layout and usually the countertops stay.

Replacing: new cabinet boxes, doors and drawers in the same or a new layout, typically with new countertops.

When refacing is the right call

Boxes are plywood or sound particleboard, there's no water damage under the sink, you like the layout, and the countertops are staying. Refacing also avoids removing counters, which is where much of a replacement's cost and disruption comes from.

When to replace

Swollen particleboard from leaks — common in older Houston kitchens with humidity and plumbing leaks — sagging shelves, a layout that doesn't work, or a plan to add an island, pantry wall or taller uppers. If you're replacing countertops anyway, new cabinets usually make more sense.

Countertops are the deciding factor

Granite and quartz tops are rarely reused when cabinets are replaced — removing them risks breakage and the new boxes may differ in size. If you love your current counters, reface. If you want new counters, compare quartz and granite and plan new cabinets at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is refacing cheaper than new cabinets?
Generally yes, because boxes, plumbing and countertops stay in place.
Can I reface particleboard cabinets?
Only if the boxes are dry and solid. Swollen or crumbling particleboard should be replaced.
Can I add an island when refacing?
You can add new matching cabinetry, but a layout change usually points toward a full replacement.
How long does each take?
Refinishing and refacing are typically days to a couple of weeks; replacement depends on cabinet lead times and countertop fabrication.
