Quartz vs granite countertops: which is better for a Houston kitchen?

October 2, 2026 8 min readUpdated October 2, 2026By Novara Construction

Quartz and granite compared on heat, stains, sealing, look, cost drivers and Houston humidity — with a clear recommendation for each kind of kitchen.

Quick answer

Quartz is the better choice for most busy Houston kitchens because it is non-porous, never needs sealing and gives a consistent pattern. Granite is the better choice if you want a one-of-a-kind natural slab, cook with very hot pans or plan an outdoor kitchen, because natural stone handles heat and UV better than resin-bound quartz. Installed cost is usually similar; slab grade, edge profile, cutouts and seam count move the price more than the material itself.

What each material actually is

Quartz countertops are engineered: roughly nine parts crushed natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed into slabs. That makes the color and veining predictable from slab to slab.

Granite is quarried natural stone cut into slabs. Every slab is different, which is the appeal — and the reason you should pick your actual slab at the yard rather than from a small sample.

Stains, sealing and daily care

Quartz is non-porous, so coffee, wine, oil and lemon juice wipe off and it never needs sealing. Clean it with mild soap and water; avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads.

Granite is porous to varying degrees. Most slabs should be sealed when installed and resealed periodically; a simple water-drop test tells you when. Lighter granites show oil stains more than darker ones.

Heat and sunlight

Granite tolerates hot cookware better. Quartz resin can scorch or discolor under a hot pan, so trivets are a must.

For outdoor kitchens and sunrooms, choose granite or another natural stone. Most quartz manufacturers do not warranty their product outdoors because UV exposure can fade the resin over time.

Look and design

Choose quartz if you want a clean white, a soft grey or a marble look without marble's maintenance — those are quartz's strengths. You can browse 25 quartz designs in our countertop collection and shortlist favorites before your consultation.

Choose granite if you want depth, movement and a slab nobody else has. It pairs especially well with warm wood cabinetry and traditional or transitional kitchens.

What moves the price

For comparable grades, installed quartz and granite land in a similar range. The real cost drivers are slab tier, square footage, number of seams, edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts, a full-height backsplash and waterfall island ends.

In a full kitchen remodel, countertops are templated after cabinets are installed, so the countertop schedule depends on the cabinet schedule.

Our recommendation for Houston homes

Families with young kids, rentals and anyone who wants zero maintenance: quartz. Serious cooks, outdoor kitchens and buyers who want a unique natural slab: granite. In bathrooms, quartz vanity tops are the easy default.

Frequently asked questions

Is quartz or granite cheaper?
At comparable grades they cost about the same installed. Slab tier, seams, edges and cutouts change the price more than the material does.
Does quartz stain?
Quartz is non-porous and resists stains, but harsh chemicals and very hot pans can damage the resin surface.
Can I use quartz in an outdoor kitchen in Houston?
It's not recommended. UV exposure can fade quartz resin; granite or other natural stone is the better outdoor choice.
Which adds more resale value?
Both read as premium to buyers. A well-chosen neutral slab in either material helps more than the choice between them.
How long does countertop installation take?
Templating happens after cabinets are set; fabrication and install usually follow within one to three weeks depending on the slab.
