A step-by-step look at how a Houston kitchen remodel is sequenced — from design and ordering to demolition, cabinets, counters and final walkthrough.
A Houston kitchen remodel has two phases: planning and construction. Planning — design, selections, pricing, ordering and any permits — often takes longer than the construction itself, because cabinets and countertops are ordered before demolition. Construction then follows a fixed order: demolition, plumbing and electrical rough-in by licensed trades, inspections where required, drywall, cabinet installation, countertop templating and installation, backsplash, fixtures and appliances, then a punch list. The biggest schedule risks are late selections, cabinets that are not on site before demolition, and layout changes that move plumbing.
Phase 1: planning before anything is torn out
The quiet weeks before demolition decide how smooth the rest will be. This is when the layout is measured and drawn, cabinets and door styles are chosen, countertops, tile, fixtures and appliances are selected, and a written scope and price are agreed.
Novara orders long-lead items — especially cabinets — during this phase and aims to have them delivered and checked before demolition starts, so the kitchen is not sitting empty while you wait on a shipment.
Phase 2: demolition and rough-in
Demolition removes cabinets, counters, flooring where included, and any walls in the plan. Then independent, state-licensed plumbers and electricians rough in new locations for sinks, appliances, lighting and outlets. In Houston, many kitchen remodels that change plumbing or electrical need a permit and inspection before walls are closed.
Phase 3: cabinets, counters and finishes
After drywall and paint prep, cabinets are installed and levelled. Countertops are templated only once base cabinets are in place, then fabricated and installed. The backsplash follows the counters. Finally come sinks, faucets, appliances, lighting and hardware.
Phase 4: punch list and walkthrough
Every project ends with a room-by-room walkthrough and a written punch list. Novara backs its work with a 1-year workmanship warranty.
