Kitchen remodeling in Katy, TX: costs, timelines, and what to expect in 2026

Most of the kitchens we remodel in Katy sit in 1995–2015 master-planned homes — Cinco Ranch, Cross Creek Ranch, Firethorne, Grand Lakes, Seven Meadows — and they share the same DNA: builder-grade maple cabinets, a peninsula that blocks the family room, granite from 2006, and a cooktop stranded on an island.

For a mid-range remodel of that kitchen — new semi-custom cabinetry, quartz counters, tile backsplash, appliance package, lighting, and flooring in the kitchen footprint — plan on $55,000 to $95,000 in 2026. Move to full custom cabinetry, natural stone slabs, professional appliances, and a reworked layout with structural changes, and you are in the $120,000 to $220,000 range.

The single biggest swing is not square footage. It is whether you move plumbing, gas, and load-bearing walls. Keeping the sink and range where they are can save $12,000–$20,000; opening a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and family room adds engineering, a beam, and usually a week or two of schedule.

Removing the half-wall or peninsula between the kitchen and family room is the highest-impact change in almost every Katy floor plan. These homes were designed with sightlines in mind but built with structure in the way; a properly engineered beam turns two rooms into one.

Second is the formal dining room nobody uses. In two-story Katy plans, that room is often adjacent to the kitchen and can be absorbed into a scullery, walk-in pantry, or coffee and beverage bar — a change that reads as luxury but costs far less than an addition.

Third is storage depth. Full-height uppers, drawer banks instead of base cabinets with doors, and a real pantry with outlets do more for daily life than any finish upgrade.

Katy is unusual: depending on your address you may permit through the City of Katy, unincorporated Harris County, Fort Bend County, or Waller County. Cosmetic kitchen work generally does not require a permit, but electrical changes, gas line relocation, and any structural modification do.

On top of that, most master-planned neighborhoods run an HOA architectural review for anything visible from the street — window changes, exterior doors, and rooflines for additions. Cabinet lead time is the schedule driver. Semi-custom lines run 6–10 weeks from approved drawings; full custom can be 10–14. We order long-lead items the week the contract is signed, not after selections are 'final,' which is how projects lose a month before they start.

Most Katy families stay put. We build a dust wall with zippered access, run negative air where needed, protect flooring on the path in and out, and set up a temporary kitchen with the old refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink alternative.
