Bathroom Remodeling Questions

Common questions about showers, tubs, waterproofing and timelines for Houston bathrooms.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A hall bathroom refresh often takes 2–4 weeks. A full primary bathroom with a new shower, tile and vanity commonly takes 4–8 weeks of construction, depending on layout changes and how quickly materials arrive.

+

Can I convert my tub into a walk-in shower?

Yes, it is one of the most requested bathroom projects. The work usually involves removing the tub, adjusting the drain and valve, installing a waterproofed shower pan and walls, and adding glass. If the bathroom is the only one with a tub, consider resale before removing it.

+

Why does waterproofing matter so much in a Houston shower?

Houston's humidity and daily shower use mean any gap in waterproofing can lead to hidden leaks, mold and rotted framing. A proper shower uses a continuous waterproof membrane behind the tile, sloped correctly to the drain, and should be flood-tested before tile goes on.

+

What is a wet room?

A wet room places the shower and often a freestanding tub together in one fully waterproofed zone, usually behind a glass partition. It looks open and modern but needs careful slope, drainage and waterproofing across the whole area.

+

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?

Cosmetic updates usually don't. Moving plumbing, adding circuits or ventilation, or structural changes generally do, and licensed plumbers and electricians handle permits for their own trade work.

+

What size tile is best for a shower floor?

Smaller tiles (such as 2×2 mosaics) follow the slope to the drain easily and give better grip. Large-format tiles can work with a linear drain, which lets the floor slope in one direction.

+

How do I prevent mold in my bathroom?

Install an exhaust fan sized for the room and vented outside, run it during and after showers, use quality waterproofing behind tile, and choose mold-resistant drywall outside wet areas.

+

Is a curbless shower a good idea?

Curbless showers are great for accessibility and look clean, but the floor usually has to be recessed or built up so water stays in the shower. It costs more and needs careful planning, especially on a slab foundation.
