Flooring, Painting & Countertop Questions

Choosing floors, paint and countertops that last in Houston homes.

What flooring is best for Houston humidity?

Porcelain tile and quality luxury vinyl plank (LVP) handle humidity and spills well. Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid hardwood in humid climates. Slab homes need moisture testing before most floors are installed.

+

LVP or tile — which should I choose?

LVP is warmer, quieter, faster to install and easier on joints. Porcelain tile is harder, more heat- and scratch-resistant and very long-lasting. Many homeowners use tile in wet areas and LVP in living spaces.

+

Can new flooring go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. Floating floors can go over flat, sound surfaces, but height changes at doors and transitions matter. Tile usually needs the old floor removed and the slab prepared.

+

How often should I repaint my home's exterior in Houston?

Sun, heat and humidity are hard on paint. Many exteriors need repainting every 5–10 years depending on the surface, paint quality and sun exposure. Good prep is what makes paint last.

+

What paint finish should I use inside?

Flat or matte for ceilings, eggshell or satin for most walls, and semi-gloss for trim, doors, kitchens and bathrooms where you need easy cleaning.

+

Is quartz better than granite?

Quartz is engineered, non-porous and consistent in color, with no sealing needed. Granite is natural, heat-resistant and unique, but needs sealing. Both are durable; it comes down to look and maintenance.

+

What's the difference between quartz and quartzite?

Quartz is an engineered product made from crushed stone and resin. Quartzite is a natural stone that is very hard and heat-resistant but needs sealing and varies slab to slab.

+

What countertop thickness should I choose?

In the U.S., 3 cm (about 1¼ inch) is the most common for kitchens and usually needs no plywood underlayment. 2 cm is lighter and often used for vanities or with a built-up edge.
