How long does a kitchen remodel take in Houston?

A cosmetic refresh (paint, hardware, counters) often takes 2–4 weeks. A full remodel with new cabinets, counters, flooring and some layout changes usually runs 6–12 weeks of construction, plus design and ordering time beforehand. Moving walls, plumbing or gas lines, or waiting on custom cabinets, adds time.

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Houston?

Replacing cabinets and countertops alone usually does not need a permit. Work that changes electrical circuits, plumbing, gas lines or structural walls generally does. Inside Houston city limits that goes through the City of Houston permitting center; suburbs and unincorporated areas have their own offices. Licensed trades pull the permits for their own work.

Can I stay in my house during a kitchen remodel?

Most families do. Plan a temporary kitchen with a fridge, microwave and a sink elsewhere in the house, and expect dust, noise and workers during working hours. Dust barriers and a clear daily schedule make it far easier.

+

What is the best countertop for a Houston kitchen?

Quartz is the most popular choice because it is non-porous, needs no sealing and handles daily use well. Granite and quartzite are natural stones with more variation and need periodic sealing. Avoid placing very hot pans directly on quartz.

+

Should I reface or replace my kitchen cabinets?

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and replaces doors, drawer fronts and veneer. It costs less and is faster, but only makes sense if the boxes are solid and you like the layout. If boxes are water-damaged or you want a new layout, replace them.

+

What adds the most value in a kitchen remodel?

Functional layout, durable surfaces, good lighting and quality storage tend to matter most to buyers. Mid-range, well-built kitchens usually recover more of their cost at resale than very high-end custom work.

+

Can I remove a wall to open up my kitchen?

Often yes, but first you need to know whether the wall is load-bearing and what runs through it (plumbing, ductwork, wiring). Load-bearing walls need a properly sized beam and usually a permit. A contractor or structural engineer can confirm before demolition.

+

What order does a kitchen remodel happen in?

Typically: design and selections, ordering, demolition, rough plumbing and electrical, inspections, drywall, flooring (often), cabinets, countertop templating and install, backsplash, fixtures and appliances, then final punch list.
